SDG 5

The United Nations outlines six goals for SDG 5 as listed below.

5.1 End all forms of discrimination against all women and girls everywhere

5.2 Eliminate all forms of violence against all women and girls in the public and private spheres, including trafficking and sexual and other types of exploitation

5.3 Eliminate all harmful practices, such as child, early and forced marriage and female genital mutilation

5.4 Recognise and value unpaid care and domestic work through the provision of public services, infrastructure and social protection policies and the promotion of shared responsibility within the household and the family as nationally appropriate

5.5 Ensure women’s full and effective participation and equal opportunities for leadership at all levels of decision making in political, economic, and public life

5.6 Ensure universal access to sexual and reproductive health and reproductive rights as agreed in accordance with the Programme of Action of the International Conference on Population and Development and the Beijing Platform for Action and the outcome documents of their review conferences

5.A Undertake reforms to give women equal rights to economic resources, as well as access to ownership and control over land and other forms of property, financial services, inheritance, and natural resources, in accordance with national laws

5.B Enhance the use of enabling technology, in particular information and communications technology, to promote the empowerment of women

5.C Adopt and strengthen sound policies and enforceable legislation for the promotion of gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls at all levels.

Guided by these goals, PSAU has a cohort of policies, regulations, and guidelines to help eliminate all forms for discrimination based on gender. These policies are grouped into six indicators as listed below and outlined pages and links contained in this webpage.

 

Guided by the six goals for SDG 5 of ending all forms of discrimination, violence, and deprivation targeted at all women and girls everywhere, PSAU has a cohort of policies, regulations, and guidelines to help eliminate all forms for discrimination based on gender. These policies are grouped into six indicators as listed below and outlined pages and links contained in this webpage.

5.3.2 PSAU policy on female admission and access to education

In terms of access and placement, the PSAU admission guidelines stipulate a merit-based admission policy that seeks to attract the best students without any form of discrimination, especially based on gender.

In fact, as of Fall 2021, the student population of the University is composed of a 58-42 female to male ratio.

The admission process is advertised every year and each application passes through the four stages enumerated below.

The first stage: taking the admission test (abilities and summative evaluation).

The second stage: reviewing the admission procedures and the available majors on the electronic admission portal.

The third stage: filling out the application form and enter the desires electronically.

The fourth stage: Following up the electronic website according to the admission calendar to know the result of the candidate screening according to the following: (Screening goes through several stages for students only).

While further details on these guidelines and updated application dates can be obtained via webpages of the Deanship of Admissions and Registration (http://dar.psau.edu.sa), the latest version of these guidelines (version 3 (2021)) can be downloaded there.

5.3.3   PSAU policy on mentoring and academic support, scholarships and financial aid to female faculty and students

5.3.3.1 Access to mentoring and academic support

The PSAU operates a university-wide policy on faculty mentoring for its students. These include one-to-one sessions with designated faculty as well as others involving diverse groups of students. The sessions are primarily aimed at identifying and supporting students to overcome academic related challenges they encounter and career related choices as they advance in their studies. The academic mentoring is considered part of the faculty members duties and the are undertaken all year long.

Furthermore, the university organises different events where outstanding members of the community considered as role models as invited to provide motivation and inspiration related different challenges of career life, family life, etc.

5.3.3.2 Access to stipends, scholarships, and bursaries

Guided by the government policy on higher education in Saudi Arabia, all duly admitted students attending public institutions are awarded monthly stipends in equal amount without discrimination regarding gender or nationality.

The guidelines stipulated by PSAU for receiving these stipends vary slightly between student’s resident in the kingdom and external students as outlined below.

General Provisions

1. The scholarship applicant shall be subject to the residency regulations in the Kingdom.

2. It is acceptable to apply for all majors except for health majors, as their acceptance is limited to Saudi students only.

3. The scholarship applicant is not entitled to transfer from Prince Sattam bin Abdulaziz University to another, and the university has the right to make an exception in the cases it deems appropriate.

4. The student is not entitled to apply for admission to more than one Saudi university.

5. The rules, regulations, and instructions in force at Prince Sattam bin Abdulaziz University shall apply to the scholarship applicant.

Admission requirements for internal scholarship students (for students residing in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia):

1. Internal scholarship students are subject to the admission requirements applicable to Saudis.

2. The student should not have obtained another scholarship from an educational institution in the Kingdom.

3. The student must have obtained a high school diploma from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

4. Not to have been dismissed from one of the educational institutions in the Kingdom.

5. To have a mahram with the student, according to the regulating instructions, provided that he is covered by a scholarship or has a regular residence.

6. To pass the medical examination decided by the university.

7. The student must be a regular resident in the Kingdom.

8. The student's age shall not be less than (17) years and not more than (25) years

9. The application must be made electronically through the academic system portal on the specified dates.

10. All majors are accepted, except for health majors, as their acceptance is limited to Saudi students only.

Submission of grant applications

Applications for grants are submitted electronically through the academic system portal at Prince Sattam bin Abdulaziz University via the link: https://scholarships.psau.edu.sa/, provided that it is during the application period specified for students, and the admission procedures are completed by the university.

Important notes when submitting electronically:

1. The residence permit must be valid for a period of no less than 3 months from the date of application.

2. You must ensure that all application stages are filled out correctly and accurately.

3. Clearly attach the documents by uploading them through the scanner and from the original document (to avoid excluding the request, it must be ensured that the documents are uploaded clearly and accurately by uploading them through the scanner and from the original document).

4. Documents to be attached when applying online (high school diploma - residence).

5.3.3.3 Access to financial aid and support

As stipulated in Chapter 7 of the Higher Education Council Law and Universities, female students of PSAU shall be provided financial aid and support based on the following provisions.

Article 41

A regular Saudi student who is not employed at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels shall be paid the following rewards and subsidies:

A- Undergraduate

1- A monthly reward of SR 1,000 for a student in scientific majors and SR 850 for a student in theoretical majors.

2 - A monthly financial aid for a blind student equal to the first-class salary of the fifth rank in the name of a reader’s allowance and certain means.

3- A excellence award of SR 1,000 for the student who achieves an excellent grade in each academic year.

B- Postgraduate

1- A monthly bonus of SR 900.

2 - A reward of one month annually, in exchange for books and references, provided that its disbursement is limited to the statutory period specified for completing the study without extensions.

3- A lump sum remuneration of 3000 riyals for a master's student and 4000 riyals for a doctoral student instead of printing the thesis

4- A monthly financial aid for a blind student equal to the salary of the first degree of the fifth rank, in the name of a reader’s allowance and certain means.

Article 42

An official scholarship student from outside the Kingdom shall be paid at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels the following rewards and subsidies:

A- A monthly stipend according to what is paid to the Saudi student.

B- A performance-based award of 1,000 riyals for a student at the undergraduate level who has achieved an excellent grade in each academic year.

C - One month’s annual bonus, in exchange for books and references, provided that its disbursement is limited to the statutory period specified for completing the study without extensions.

D- A lump sum reward of 3000 (SAR) for a master’s student and (400 (R) for a doctoral student instead of printing the thesis.

E - A reduced tourism class ticket when traveling at the end of each academic year from the nearest way to the residence Provided that the student has not obtained a ticket from another destination.

Article 43

The university may accommodate a student who is not a regular employee at the undergraduate or postgraduate levels in case of Availability of housing at the university.

Article 44

If the student’s academic program requires him to travel outside the city of study, the university will provide him with a one-time, round-trip economy class travel ticket, based on the recommendation of the department and college councils and the approval of the university director.

Article 45

The university may provide students with meals at reduced prices, and the university council determines the amount to be paid by each student for every meal.

Article 46

By a decision of the university rector, regular students in the university’s faculties may be employed in some appropriate jobs outside the study time according to the following controls:

1- Availability of financial credit.

2 - That the contract is for the hours system or temporary jobs.

3- The remuneration shall not exceed 1,000 riyals per month

 

 

5.3.4 PSAU policy to expand access to education for female students

Through its numerous outreach programmes, PSAU engages and encourages female applications in all its programmes, particularly where they are underrepresented. In this regard and thanks to the phenomenal changes taking place in the kingdom, the University will be commencing extending admissions to programmes where female enrolment was hitherto not available. In Spring 2022, PSAU will welcome its first ever cohort of female electrical engineering (EE) students. These students are already part of the preparatory (foundation) year, and they will be absorbed into the EE programme based on merit.

5.6.1 PSAU policy against discrimination and rights of women

PSAU has a stringent policy against all forms of discrimination, particularly those targeted at female faculty and students. As a merit-based institution, students’ admission as well as faculty hiring, and promotion are all dictated by the same standards as their male counterparts.

5.6.3 PSAU policy on maternity leave for female faculty and students

PSAU maintains a policy on maternity leave that is applicable to all its female staff and students. This policy is guided by the Kingdom’s labour laws, specifically Articles 151 and 152 of the public sector labour rules as stipulate below.

Article 151

The female employee is entitled to maternity leave with full pay for a period of (seventy) days, distributed as she likes, starting with a maximum of twentyeight days before the weighted, weighted, and medically based date.

Article 152

A. With appropriate adjustments, PSAU students are equally excused from some assessments while makeup sessions to augment hose missed are arranged with relevant faculty via their respective departments.

5.6.8 PSAU policy to protect whistle-blowers

PSAU operates a centralised reporting system for all complaints pertaining to discrimination, favouritism, corrupt practices, and other violations, particularly those targeting women. Through this committee members of the University are encouraged to make anonymous reports regarding any violation or infringement. At the core of the committee’s principles is safeguarding the identity and integrity of whistle-blowers who report such cases.
